(Mahagenco) supplies electricity to Maharashtra including Mumbai and is the second largest power producing company in India with a total generation of about 14,400 MW, with Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) being the biggest consumer. Mumbai’s power demand in summer reaches upto 3,400-3,600 MW and drops to about 2,400 MW during winters. Power demand in the region declined amid COVID-19 as major manufacturing and industrial operations were halted and malls, hospitality sector, automobile units and small businesses were also completely shut down. However, the demand increased substantially by 53% in the MMR region as commercial activity and offices resumed their usual activities.

The anticipated growth in power demand would be due to progressively increasing per capita consumption, considering the fact that it is 9th largest city by population in the world.
