Mumbai Metropolitan Region Power Sector Outlook Synopsis
Mumbai Metropolitan Region power demand has registered a steady growth during recent years on the back of growing demand from increasing economic activity in key sectors including real estate, hospitality, data centers, Mumbai metro rail and others. Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd. (Mahagenco) supplies electricity to Maharashtra including Mumbai and is the second largest power producing company in India with a total generation of about 14,400 MW, with Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) being the biggest consumer. Mumbai’s power demand in summer reaches upto 3,400-3,600 MW and drops to about 2,400 MW during winters. Power demand in the region declined amid COVID-19 as major manufacturing and industrial operations were halted and malls, hospitality sector, automobile units and small businesses were also completely shut down. However, the demand increased substantially by 53% in the MMR region as commercial activity and offices resumed their usual activities.
According to 6Wresearch, Mumbai Power Demand And Supply is projected to grow substantially during 2017-2025F. The anticipated growth in power demand would be due to progressively increasing per capita consumption, considering the fact that it is 9th largest city by population in the world. Furthermore, data centers, Mumbai metro rail project, EV charging infrastructure and housing projects such as construction of ultra-luxury skyscrapers by Marathon group and development of residential society by Suntek Realty in Mumbai metropolitan region would result in surge of power demand. The region being one of the country’s largest tourism destination and a surge in luxury projects such as Raheja Imperia I, Rustomjee Global City, Wadhwa Wadhwa Pristine and other such projects, is predicted to result in a 50% increase in branded hotel room inventory over the next 4-5 years would augment the demand for power in the city.
However, transmission capacity is projected to grow at moderate rate during the forecast period on the back of government’s initiatives for expansion of transmission lines to counter the inadequacy of transmission networks that are likely to hamper the grid of Mumbai metropolitan region as city’s power units accounts for only 50% of its peak demand. Additionally, the power consumption of Mumbai and its suburbs is expected to rise upto ~5,000 MW according to government estimate by 2024-2025 thus, the state is planning to increase the power generation by another 1,000 MW in addition to the existing generation of 1,877 MW. However, according to 6Wresearch estimate MMRs estimated power demand would be 5626 MW.
