Japan-based Terra Drone to Setup CoE in India for UAVs/Drone Development

Tokyo, Japan-based Terra Drone, a leading commercial drone services company, will establish a first-of-its-kind Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Drones in India and for same Terra Drone has inked a pact with Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, where the centre will be set up.

Terra Drone will support IIT Hyderabad to organise workshops, seminars, lectures and joint projects that leverage cutting-edge unmanned technologies and drone LiDAR systems.

According to Toru Tokushige, CEO, Terra Drone Corporation, "As the world's fastest-growing major economy, the potential for commercial drone market in India is huge."

Terra Drone India, the company's India unit, would also offer internship programmes to talented students and prepare them for the real-world technology applications. Terra Drone India offers a complete sales-service-support module for the drone ecosystem.

Having a presence in more than 20 countries, Terra data provides innovative drone solutions like aerial surveys, infrastructure inspection, thermal mapping, UAV data processing, etc., for a wide variety of industries. In addition, the company is at the forefront of several innovations in the aviation industry, including promoting the application of AI technologies in drones and providing advisory services to the ongoing 'flying car' project in Japan.

According to 6Wresearch, the India UAV market is poised to grow at a CAGR of 18%4 during 2017-23 in terms of revenue.

In August last year, the Indian government has announced first Drone Policy and allowed commercial use of drones starting December 2018. Two months later food delivery firm Zomato acquired a drone delivery startup TechEagle Innovations to carve its path toward drone-based food delivery in India.

In February, Adani Defence & Aerospace and Israel-based Elbit Systems together launched India's first private sector unit for manufacturing UAVs to cater to both the Indian armed forces and the global market. The unit was launched at Adani Aerospace Park near Shamshabad in Hyderabad creating an aerospace and defence ecosystem for manufacturing.
