Ammonium hypophosphite is a white crystalline solid with the chemical formula (NH4)2HPO2. It is used as a reducing agent in various industries such as photography, electroplating, and photographic developers. It has also been used in the production of antifreeze agents for radiators and boilers. Ammonium hypophosphite can be prepared by reacting phosphorous pentoxide with ammonia gas or by treating phosphoric acid with ammonia gas. It exists as an odorless hygroscopic powder which decomposes on heating to form nitrogen dioxide and phosphorus oxychloride gases.
Ammonium hypophosphite finds application in several automotive components including brake fluid, fuel tanks, exhaust systems etc., due to its superior properties such as corrosion resistance, low viscosity and anti-freezing ability which makes it ideal for use in these components.
