Single Superphosphate (SSP) is a type of phosphate fertilizer that consists primarily of mono-calcium phosphate. It is produced by reacting phosphoric acid with a form of calcium, such as lime or gypsum. SSP provides phosphorus in an easily absorbable form for plants and can also be used to correct soil deficiencies in secondary nutrients like magnesium and sulfur. Indonesia is one the largest producers and consumers of Single superphosphate in Asia Pacific Region due to its large population, high agricultural production capacity, favorable government policies towards encouraging fertilizers use among farmers.
Demand for single superphosphate has been on the rise over the past decade due to increasing awareness amongst farmers regarding crop nutrition needs. This trend has further accelerated during COVID-19 pandemic as countries are increasingly focused on self-reliance for food security amid various disruptions that global supply chain witnessed due to pandemic related lockdowns imposed across regions worldwide. Additionally, easy availability & low price makes it attractive for small scale farmers who lack access to more expensive water soluble fertilizers alternatives available in market today.
The major drivers behind increased demand include rising prices & limited availability of other phosphatic fertilizers coupled with factors such as growing population leading need for higher crop yield per acreage unit; governments providing subsidies & incentives targeted at promoting usage among farmers; improving macroeconomic environment resulting into better purchasing power etc.
COVID-19 pandemic led lockdowns have resulted into disruption across entire value chain ranging from manufacturing delays at production sites to transportation limitations leading into supply side shocks which impacted price levels during initial months after outbreak started globally however situation normalised later when countries opened up their economies again allowing manufacturers/suppliers normalize operations.
Despite popularity amongst certain farmer cohorts there exists few challenges when it comes to single superphosphates usage such as poor results if not applied properly or difficulties associated with application process owing bulkiness of product itself resulting into lesser efficiency compared with water soluble alternative versions offered by competitors (which usually come in soluble powder/granules format).
Major players operating within Indonesia Single Super Phosphate Market includes PT Pupuk Sriwijaya ,PT Petrokimia Gresik , PT Tiga Pilar Sejahtera Food , Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN).
