India is amongst the fastest growing countries in aviation industry. Aviation industry can be segmented as civil and defense, wherein civil segment registered augmented growth over the last five years attributed to increase in volume of air passenger traffic. India is ranked #9 in global air passenger traffic volume, which recorded 10% growth in FY’2015. Although, civil aviation contributes majorly in the overall aviation industry but defense aviation is also surging owing to expansion of military airbases and increasing defense spending.
Air Traffic Control (ATC) equipment are the core building blocks of aviation industry that are deployed for carrying out flight operations. Demand for ATC equipment grew in the last few years on account of expansion and modernization of existing civil airports.
According to 6Wresearch, India Air Traffic Control Equipment Market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.08% during 2016-22. India ATC equipment market is highly consolidated with international players such as Raytheon, Thales, Rockwell Collins, Schmid, and Eldis dominating the market. ATC equipment are majorly imported in the country, where these are either directly procured or assembled.
In India’s ATC equipment market, communication equipment accounted for largest market share in 2015, followed by surveillance and navigation equipment segments. In communication equipment segment, HF/VHF/UHF communication equipment led the market volume share followed by DATIS equipment.
According to Rajat Kharbanda, Senior Consultant, Research and Consulting, 6Wresearch, “Construction of new airports, increase in passenger volume and rise in aircraft movement have driven the market for ATC equipment in India. After the introduction of ‘Make in India’ campaign by the Government of India in 2014, production of various ATC equipment in the coming years is anticipated”.
“Moreover, with expected operation of Advanced Landing Grounds across North and North-Eastern regions, demand for new ATC equipment would increase in defense segment”, Rajat further added.
According to Akash Shukla, Research Associate, Research and Consulting, 6Wresearch, “India’s defense spending reached around $50 billion in 2015 and is expected to grow at 9.7% over next 5 years. The growth in defense spending would result into demand for new defense equipment. Additionally, project for modernization of airfields would add to the growth of ATC equipment. For execution of Modernization of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI) project, Tata Power SED has tied up with Raytheon and Northrop Grumman”.
“India is developing it’s indigenize satellite based navigation system- ‘GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN)’, which once operational would fuel the market for navigation equipment. Upon its implementation around 65 operational and more than 400 airstrips would be benefitted by this system,” Akash concluded.
