Improving access to electricity across the nation is one of the prime objectives of the present Indonesian government. As a part of this objective, initiatives are underway to increase the national average electrification ratio and bring more people onto the country’s power grid. In an attempt to increase the national power capacity by 35GW by 2019, various new power plants are being set up across the nation. Additionally, the growing residential sector in Indonesia would also contribute to the rise in the sale of switchgear, thus driving the overall switchgear market. However, it is expected that the market growth would experience a slowdown during the Presidential Elections in 2019.
According to 6Wresearch, the Indonesia switchgear market revenues are projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.4% during 2017-23. Projects such as the $1.7 billion Jakarta MRT Project and the $5 billion Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway Project are slated for 2019 completion and would contribute to improving the infrastructure and transportation sectors of the country. Further, Government initiatives such as the One Million Houses Programme and the 35 GW Power Plan would help boost Indonesia’s residential and power utilities sectors. This would help in the development of new houses and power plants which would subsequently increase the demand for switchgear during the forecast period.
According to Ravi Bhandari, Assistant Manager, 6Wresearch, "Residential sector and Power Utilities are the key revenue-generating segments in the Indonesia switchgear market due to high utilization of low voltage and high voltage switchgear in these two sectors."
"Commercial and infrastructure sectors are also expected to grow on account of multiple projects that are under construction or in the planning phase in the country", Ravi further added.
According to Rachit Gulati, Research Associate, Research and Consulting, 6Wresearch, "By voltage, the low voltage segment (< 1 kV) is the highest market revenue shareholder in the overall switchgear market. This is due to high consumption of low voltage switchgear components in the residential and commercial applications."
"The medium and high voltage segments are expected to gain significant revenue share in the future as well due to developing power and infrastructure verticals in Indonesia. However, low voltage segment is still expected to dominate the market over the coming years", Rachit further said.
Some of the major companies in the Indonesian switchgear market include – ABB, Siemens, Schneider, Hitachi, General Electric, and Fuji Electric.
