Beef consumption has been steadily increasing since 2015 due to improving economic conditions and population growth. The majority of imports come from Australia, New Zealand and India. In 2019, the total volume imported was 66 thousand metric tons valued at US$105 million. The main suppliers are Australia (43%), New Zealand (30%) and India (20%). Imports have mainly served as a supplement for domestic production which is not able to meet local demand for high-quality beef cuts used in restaurants or luxury hotels.
